Full History

In 1938, Al West and Bud West started West Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Tom West

joined his father and brother shortly after. In 1962, Rollie Kjos became a partner with the West family, and the funeral home then took the name of West-Kjos Funeral Home.

Bud West and Rollie Kjos continued their partnership until Bud retired in 1980, when Wayne Standal joined the firm as a partner. Rollie and Wayne continued their partnership until Rollie retired in 1985, and Karl Hagen joined Wayne in a partnership.

Charles (Chuck) Standal joined the firm as a licensed funeral director in 1993 and purchased the funeral home in 2003, following the retirement of Wayne and Karl. In 2017, Chuck partnered with the Vertin family and David-Donehower Funeral and Cremation Service to better serve Detroit Lakes and the surrounding communities. This alliance has enabled the sharing of licensed staff, facilities, and equipment.

Throughout the many changes that come with time, West-Kjos Funeral Home has always remained dedicated to providing the same personal service and commitment to quality this area is accustomed to.
