Marlene R. Hedlund, 73, rural Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota. Marlene was born on January 29, 1936, the daughter of Arthur and Edna (Rindy) Nordgulen in Rochert, Minnesota. She grew up on the family sheep and dairy farm in rural, Rochert. Marlene attended grade school at the Lone Pine School and graduated from Frazee High School in 1954. As a young adult, she became a secretary at Hawley High School. Marlene was united in marriage to James Hedlund on March 10, 1956 at Eglund Lutheran Church, rural Rochert. They moved to Bagley, Minnesota and later to the McIntosh-Winger area. Marlene worked at the local hardware store in McIntosh for seventeen years. After their retirement, they moved to their home on Little Floyd Lake Road in 1997. Marlene was an active member of the womenchr(39)s circles of Bakke Lutheran Church. She enjoyed baking, ceramics, rosemaling, playing cards, especially Hand and Foot, Pegs and Jokers and Mexican Dominos. Marlene also enjoyed square dancing, dancing at the Odd Fellows Club and just listening to old time music. She also developed a passion for family genealogy, something she did for the last twenty years. One thing Marlene enjoyed most was time spent with her family and the long drives she shared with Jim. Marlene is survived by her husband, Jim Hedlund; three sons, Mark (Joni) Hedlund of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Neal Hedlund of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; Gary (Tami) Hedlund of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Cory (Miranda) Hedlund, Cortney (Travis) Ryan, Kelsey (Gabriel) Fransen, Travis Hedlund; three great-grandchildren, Connor Hedlund, Emma Ryan, Ella Fransen; one brother, Arlin (Betty) Nordgulen of Alexandria, Minnesota; step-mother, Alice Nordgulen of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents.
