Valare L. Hammer, 79, rural Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Valare was born on July 21, 1930 to Franz and Agnes (Winter) Sivertson in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She attended country school at District 81 in Shell Lake Township and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. Valare attended Normal Training in Park Rapids, Minnesota and then attended Bemidji State University, receiving a teaching degree. She was united in marriage to Leonard Hammer on February 6, 1954 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, Minnesota. Valare taught for twenty years at various schools, which included District 81, Frazee and Ponsford. Valare and Leonard raised strawberries at Hammerchr(39)s Berry farm for over fifty years. Valare enjoyed painting, quilting, needlework, reading and traveling. She was a member of St. Johnchr(39)s Lutheran Church of Height of land. Valare is survived by her husband, Leonard of rural Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; three sons, Marvin (Blanche) Hammer of Woodbury, Minnesota; Gary (Arlene) Hammer of Burtrum, Minnesota; Russell (Vicki) Hammer of Belgrade, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Wesley Hammer, Andrew Hammer, Michelle (Chris) Welte, Annette (Pat) Mohs, MaryAnne (Nathan) Toutges, Amie Hammer; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Vaida (Thurman) Wettlund, Vernette Leslie, Velda (Charles) Deike all of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews.
