Doris M. Berglund Geyer age 79 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Tuesday December 8, 2009 at her residence. Doris Myra Schultz was born on June 16, 1930 in rural Callaway, Minnesota to Ben and Celia Shauer Schultz. She attended rural school and graduated from Waubun High School with salutatorian honors. She married Orrin H. Berglund on May 30, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Callaway, MN. They made their home in Detroit Lakes. Orrin died in 1993. She started working for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator in Detroit Lakes in 1948 and was transferred to the DL District Office in 1957, working as Force Adjustment Clerk for nine cities. In 1966 Doris resigned from the company to become a "stay at home mom". In 1984 she became part-time office help at Hedahls in Detroit Lakes. In 1987 she was hired by Dakota Clinic in Detroit Lakes as their first full time switchboard attendant. She resigned in 1999 when she married Paul Geyer and became involved in his travel business, traveling extensively world wide. Doris was active in several local organizations including Mrs. Jaycees. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 50 years and was instrumental in organizing a local tennis association and holding yearly tournaments. She assisted with the Dick Beardsley Marathon, getting volunteers for registration. She was also involved with different committees at Zion Lutheran Church, Telecare Ministry and holding offices in Lutheran Women Missionary League. She was chairman of the North Shore Townhomes Association. In earlier years she was a bowler and a golfer, but devoted her later years to bridge. She loved reading, music, traveling, and dancing. She loved to have people visit and frequently entertained family and friends. She was a Viking fan and liked most sports except baseball which she said moved to slow for her. She loved decorating the house according to the seasons, especially Christmas. She also enjoyed garage sales and flea markets. Her only regret was that she never learned to play the piano, but she will now learn to play the harp and join the Heavenly Choir. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Orrin Berglund (1993), husband Paul Geyer (2003), brothers in law, Desmond Kunz and Arthur Miller. She is survived by her son, John (Brenda) Berglund of Novi, Michigan; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Addison, and Jackson, five sisters, Vivian Miller, of Barnsville, MN, Norma Kunz, of Ogema, MN, Rhoda (Vernon) Hanson, of Detroit Lakes, MN, Diantha (Dick) Lund, of Frazee, MN, and Donna (Ken) Dalve, of Shakopee, MN; brother in law, Earl (Donna) Berglund, of Carlos, MN; sister in law Phyllis (Lewis) Mattocks, of Alexandria, MN; and nieces and nephews. Survivors also include a step family; Stan (Bev) Geyer, and Anna (Richard) Heinrich, of Edina, MN; two step grandsons, two step granddaughters, and four step great grandchildren.
