Terry J. Taves, 58, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Friday, April 16, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Terry was born on August 13, 1951, the son of James and Marjorie (Schultz) Taves in Fargo, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1969. After graduation, Terry worked for Schultz & Lindsay Construction out of Fargo. He later returned to Detroit Lakes and raised turkeys on the family farm. Terry was united in marriage to Betsy Dodds on August 9, 1975, at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church in rural Detroit Lakes. After many years in the turkey business, he returned to road construction and worked for Driveway Service in Detroit Lakes. He continued with Driveway Service until poor health forced him to retire. Terry had a true passion for classic cars, a great interest in all things mechanical, and was a proud and fun-loving husband and dad. His love extended to his beloved pets, which include Beanie, Little Cat, Izzy, Fritzy and Henry. He was also a diehard and loyal fan of all Minnesota sports. Some of his best times were spent in the garage with his son Alex and friends. Terry is survived by his wife, Betsy Taves of Detroit Lakes, MN; his children, Tina Taves of Edina, MN; Alex (Jennifer) Taves of Shakopee, MN; Annie Taves of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers, Steven (Shirley) Taves of Glyndon, MN; David (Sandy) Taves of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sisters, Sandra Taves and Sonja Taves both of Detroit Lakes, MN; as well as several nieces and nephews. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, newborn son, Daniel, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Mary Ann Dodds and sister-in-law, Sheila (Mike) England.
