Fern K. Schafer

Fern Kathleen Schafer of Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, Minnesota, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimerchr(39)s. Fern Kathleen Schafer was born on January 21, 1920 to Russell and Mildred (Gray) Schamens in Cando, North Dakota. Fern was raised in Cando and attended nurses training at St. Johnchr(39)s in Fargo, graduating in the spring of 1950 as a registered nurse. Fern married Charles Schafer on September 12, 1950 and they eventually made their home in Rolla, North Dakota. Fern went back to college at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and graduated in 1980 as a Nurse Practitioner. Fern returned to the Rolla community, where she worked as a FNP for the hospital, clinic, Rolla school system and the Rolla County Jail, until retiring in 1994 -1995. They moved to the Detroit Lakes area, spending their summers at Strawberry Lake and winters in Wes Laco, Texas. Fern is survived by her two sons, Russell (LuAnn) Schafer of Auburn, WA; John (Kimberly) Schafer of Audubon, MN; sister, Linda Shaffer of Twin Falls, ID; grandchildren, Margaret Mundy, Susan Mundy, Michael Mundy, Christopher Christensen, Benjamin Christensen, Brian Schafer, Emmie Schafer Bauer, Stephanie Schafer, Typhanie Schafer, Brittanie Schafer; great grandchildren, Abigail Mundy, Makena Mundy and Anissa Mundy. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles (2006), two daughters, Vicia Schafer Miller (2007) and Kathleen Schafer Hedge (2008).
