Hazel N. Stenhjem age 82, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday Jan. 12, 2011 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND surrounded by her loving family. Hazel Norma Stenhjem was born on Sept. 1, 1928 in Ransom County, ND to Henry and Signe Jensen Smedshammer. She grew up and attended school in that area, graduating from Enderlin High School. She then moved to Fargo, where she worked for the Internal Revenue Service. In 1949 she was united in marriage to Truman Stenhjem in Enderlin, ND. They made their home and raised their family in Fargo. Summers were spent at the cottage on Lake Sallie near Detroit Lakes, and in 1982 they moved to the lake permanently. Hazelchr(39)s faith was very important to her. She was very active at Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes as well as Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo. She was also very involved with her children and their activities when they were growing up. Hazel enjoyed sewing and needlework, and her community volunteer work was an important part of her life. Hazel is survived by one son, David Stenhjem, of Detroit Lakes, MN; five daughters, Karen (Fred) Blum, of Detroit Lakes, MN; Diane (Kent) Haugen, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; Nancy (Eric) Hofstrand, of Lake Park, MN; Janet (Jim) Ward, of Colorado Springs, CO; and Tracy Stenhjem, of Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, Michael (Shauna) Stenhjem, of Detroit Lakes, MN; Eric Haugen, of Fargo, ND; Kari (John) Thorson, of W. Fargo, ND; and Christoffer Haugen, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; one great granddaughter, Tilly Stenhjem; one sister, Grace (Emil) Dunham, of Willmar, MN; three brothers, Howard (Harriet) Smedshammer, of W. Fargo, ND; Don (Reba) Smedshammer, of Lake St. Louis, MO; and Ron (Diane) Smedshammer, of Sun City, AR; one brother in law, Erling (Alice) Stenhjem, of Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Truman (1994); three sisters, Ruby, Stella, and Marlys; and her parents. "Blessed be the memory of Hazel Stenhjem."
