Gary L. Winter, 61, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Essentia Health, Fargo, North Dakota. Gary was born on July 24, 1949, the son of Henry and Pearl (Wray) Winter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended school in Cedar Rapids and later in Park Rapids, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1967. During his high school years he worked at the family resort, Pine Springs Resort on Straight Lake. Gary was united in marriage to Karol Gottsman on May 13, 1967 in Park Rapids. He received a Architectural Drafting Degree from Wahpeton State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Gary and Karol made their home in Detroit Lakes in 1974, where Gary was manager of Lampert Lumber Company until 1981. Gary worked for area lumber yards and as a real estate agent for area agencies. He also was project superintendent for the construction of many hotels throughout the United States prior to starting his own construction company. In 2004, he started Winter and Sons Construction which he owned and operated until his death. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his friends and especially his family. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Gary is survived by his wife, Karol Winter of Detroit Lakes, MN; three sons, Randy (Angie) Winter of Fergus Falls, MN; Brad (Kim) Winter and Brian (Jethe) Winter both of Detroit Lakes, MN; one daughter, Kaia (Tim) Erickson of Detroit Lakes, MN; twelve grandchildren, Amber, Hailey, Nathan and Trace Winter, Ethan, Taylor, Mallory and Jace Winter, Breck and Reece Winter, Evelyn and Wyatt Erickson; his mother, Pearl Winter of Bettendorf, IA; one sister, Doris McFarland of Bettendorf, IA; one brother, Louis (LaVerta) Langenberg of Lisbon, IA; numerous nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his father, granddaughter, Kristina Winter, two brothers, Richard Langenberg and Kenneth Langenberg.
