Hugh A. Long age 83 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Sunday May 22, 2011 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Hugh Arlem Long was born On October 6, 1927 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Hugh M. and Edna I. Hanson Long. He grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1945. He then attended the Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis, where he graduated in 1947 with certification in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He returned to Detroit Lakes and worked for Star Electric, where he learned the skills to become an electrician. On October 15, 1949 he was united in marriage to Donna J. Peterson. They made their home in Detroit Lakes. Hugh joined the National Guard in 1948 and later served in the U. S. Army from 1952-1953. He retired from the National Guard in 1979 with the rank of Captain. He purchased Hill Electric in Detroit Lakes, which later became Longchr(39)s Electric. He and his partner Sam Sumner owned and operated that business for several years. In 1974 he sold the business and started teaching the Construction Electrician Course at the Wadena Vocational and Technical Institute. He retired from there in 1991. Hughchr(39)s faith and church were very important to him. He was very active at First Baptist Church. He served as a Trustee for many years, and very often could be found helping in the kitchen. Family was also very important to Hugh. He enjoyed helping others, especially working with his Dad on carpentry and roofing jobs. He also enjoyed Sunday afternoon picnics, visiting friends and family, and working in the yard. His other interests included woodworking, hunting, hobby farming and his horses. Hugh is survived by his wife Donna, one daughter, Donna Jean (Thomas) Johansson, of Bemidji, MN; one son Brian (Angie) Long, of Farson, WY; three grandchildren, Lucinda (Chris) Moore, of Detroit Lakes, MN; Brandon (Josie) Long, of Farson WY; and Ashley Johansson, of Bemidji, MN; four great grandchildren, Rylee and Leslie Moore and Braydon and Bree Long; one sister Marlys Thompson, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents.
