Marlys A. Thompson age 78 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Friday June 17, 2011 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, after a short battle with cancer. Marlys Agatha Thompson was born on December 29, 1932 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Hugh M. and Edna I. "Irene" Hanson Long. She grew up and received her education in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1950. She then worked as a bookkeeper and cashier at the Blandingchr(39)s Dept. Store in Detroit Lakes. It was there that she would meet her future husband Duane Thompson. On August 13, 1955 they were united in marriage in Detroit Lakes, where they made their home. Marlys then started working for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, where she was the secretary for the District Engineer for 30 years. She retired early to spent time and travel with Duane. Marlys enjoyed her cats "Muffin" and "Yum Yum". She also enjoyed playing the organ. Her number one priority was always spending time and taking care of Duane. She is survived by her sister in law, Donna Long, of Detroit Lakes, MN; nephew, Brian (Angie) Long, of Farson, Wy; niece, Donna-Jean (Tom) Johansson, of Bemidji, MN; special niece, Lucinda (Chris) Moore, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two little nieces, Rylee and Leslie Moore; great nephew, Brandon (Josie) Long, of Farson, Wy; great great nephew, Braydon Long; great great niece, Bree Long; great niece, Ashley Johansson, of Bemidji, MN; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Duane (4/9/11); and one brother Hugh Long.
