LeRoy Laverne Stensgard, 85, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota died Friday, June 24, 2011 at Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls, Minnesota. LeRoy was born in Fargo, North Dakota on January 26, 1926 to Theodore C. and Clara L. (Olson) Stensgard. Leroy moved with his parents to the family farm in rural Pelican Rapids, Minnesota in 1932 and attended country school in district 1. He enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1944 and served until September of 1946. After his military service, LeRoy worked in California for a short time before returning to Detroit Lakes in 1948. LeRoy re-enlisted in the armed forces as a member of 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and served on the Paratrooper Airborne Combat Team. He was honorably discharged in 1952. LeRoy returned to Detroit Lakes and worked construction for a short time, before working for the Detroit Lakes Public Schools as a custodian until retiring in 1986. After his retirement he continued to work at a local car wash and for the Hotel Shoreham until fully retiring in 2000. Leroy liked to hunt in his early years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Leroy was a lifetime member of the VFW Club 1676, American Legion Club and the Eagles Club. Leroy is survived by his sister, Lucille Hanson of Rio Vista, CA; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alvin and Milton Stensgard, sister, Gladys Anderson.
