Jay R. "Rex" Stoutenburg, 80 of Perham, Minnesota, formerly of Barnesville, Minnesota, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at Perham Memorial Hospital. Rex was born on December 22, 1930, the son of Frank and Alice (Lind) Stoutenburg in Bertha, Minnesota. He attended country school in Bertha until first grade, when his family moved to Hibbing, Minnesota where, Rex continued his education. He finished his high school education at St. Paul Agriculture School. Rex was spend summers working at his aunt and unclechr(39)s farm. He enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1954. Rex was married to Lois Tommerdahl on December 29, 1955 at Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Glyndon, Minnesota. He worked with grain elevator construction and soil conservation for a short time. Rex received his teaching degree from Moorhead State University and began his teaching career at Barnesville High School as a history teacher. He continued to teach in Barnesville his entire career until retiring in 1991. During his years of retirement, Rex and Lois enjoyed traveling to visit family and spending several winters in Arizona and Texas. Rex enjoyed playing Pinnacle, drinking coffee with the guys, fishing with his family and friends at the Lake of the Woods. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Rex is survived by his wife, Lois Stoutenburg of Perham, MN; three sons, Keith (Lisa) Stoutenburg of Phoenix, AZ; Kyle (Rhonda) Stoutenburg of Moorhead, MN; Matthew (Pam) Stoutenburg of Olympia, WA; five grandchildren, Luke, Tristan, Isabella, Jonah and Jay Stoutenburg; sister, Arliss Naylor of Ferndale, WA; two brothers-in-law, Wescott (Marie Thomson) Tommerdahlof Felton, MN; Dennis (Sharon) Tommerdahl of Lake Park, MN; sister-in-law, Lorayne Tommerdahl of Rockford, IL; special niece, Shelia (Jim) Atwater of Ferndale, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. Rex was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tom Smith.
