Charles Holtgrewe age 87 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Friday September 23, 2011 at Golden Manor in Detroit Lakes. Charles Holtgrewe was born on October 17, 1923 in Paderborn, Germany to George and Martha Luhr Holtgrewe. The family moved to the United States when Charles was one year old. They made their home in Dwight, North Dakota, where Charles grew up and attended school. They later moved to Staples, MN, where Charles attended and played basketball for Staples High School. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1943-1946 as an airplane mechanic. On December 1, 1945 he was united in marriage to Katy Powell in Indianapolis, Indiana. They lived in Olympia, Washington a while before moving to Detroit Lakes. Charles worked for RESCO of Moorhead, MN for many years, retiring from there in 1988. He and Katy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2005. Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports on TV, and living on the lake. He loved spending time with his family, who will dearly miss him. He is survived by his daughter, Pam (Jim) Wilson, of Rochert, MN; four grandchildren, Scott Wilson, of Barnesville, MN; Kari Stelter, of Detroit Lakes, MN; Nicole (Don) Strandberg, of Audubon, MN; and Brandi Wilson, of Detroit Lakes, MN; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Katy; parents; three brothers, Henry, Ben, and George Holtgrewe; and one sister, Katie Hinrichs.
