Harold L. "Smoky" Johnson age 86 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Monday April 9, 2012 at Essentia Health "? Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN. Harold L. Johnson was born on October 29, 1925 in Manitoba Junction, MN to Theodore and Annie Westberg Johnson. He spent most of his youth on the family farm one mile west of Audubon, MN. He met Doris Swapp and they were married in June of 1946 at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in Audubon, MN. They made their home in Detroit Lakes, MN where Harold went to work for the Becker County Highway Dept. He worked there until 1956 when he took a job with Peterchr(39)s Meat products. He worked for them until they went out of business in 1972. He then started his own meat sales route, selling Ambassador Meat. He sold that route and retired in 1996. Harold is survived by three daughters, Susan (Thomas) Disse, of Detroit Lakes, MN; Vikki Jo (Doug) Johnson, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Kimberly (Brian) Benscoter, of Detroit Lakes, MN; three sons, Terry (Susan) Johnson, of Audubon, MN; Gregory (Deb) Johnson, of St. Cloud, MN; and Danny Johnson, of Detroit Lakes, MN; son in law, Jerry (Kathy) Disse, of Detroit Lakes, MN; eighteen grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene(Arlen) Restad, of Eagan, MN; and Elaine Oss, of Elk River, MN; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mardy Murphy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (11/2/99); one daughter, Nancy Disse; an infant son, Joey; an infant grandson, Matthew Disse; and eleven brothers and sisters. Smoky was a baseball legend in the Detroit Lakes area, where he played amateur baseball for many years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, camping, and time spent with his family. He will be dearly missed by many.
