Ale E. Niemi, 87, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Essentia Health "? St. Marychr(39)s Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Ale was born on June 5, 1924, the son of Waino and Esther (Heinonen) Niemi in Chisholm, Minnesota. As a young child, his family moved to the Snellman area. Following the death of his parents, he was raised by John and Lempi Hendrickson. Ale attended country school at Pickerel Lake. He served in the United States Army from 1944 "? 1946. Ale was united in marriage to Irene Bakken on November 18, 1950 in Ponsford, Minnesota. They made their home in Duluth for a short time before returning to the Snellman area. Ale began employment with the Boy Scouts of America in June of 1953 as a Camp Ranger at Many Point Scout Camp and retired in February of 1987. Ale enjoyed woodworking, snowmobiling, deer hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed taking a ride in the car with Irene to enjoy the sights and sounds of the area. Ale is survived by his wife, Irene Niemi of Detroit Lakes, MN; four children, Elmer (Renae) Niemi of Breckenridge, MN; John (Laurel) Niemi of Detroit Lakes, MN; Olga Niemi of Moorhead, MN; Larry (Gail) Niemi of Mahnomen, MN; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and aunt, Ann Mattson of Granite Pass, OR. Ale was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother and sister, Janice LeGrange.
