Mary J. DeShaw

Mary Jacqueline "Jackie" DeShaw, 86, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Essentia Health St. Marychr(39)s , Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Jackie was born on March 24, 1926, the daughter of Sidney and Cornelia (Black) Stockstead in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. She was raised and educated in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Her family later moved to Minneapolis, where Jackie graduated from Marshall High School. Jackie was united in marriage to Edward C. DeShaw on January 30, 1954 in St. Paul, Minnesota. They moved from Minneapolis to Detroit Lakes in 1961. Jackie was a homemaker and loving mother, raising her four children and devoting her time to seeing them through Detroit Lakes High School, getting them through college, seeing them married and enjoying the grandchildren they gave her. Jackie enjoyed many crafts and creative projects throughout her life, especially knitting and crocheting. She created countless afghans, even in her last days. She was a member of homemakers and bridge club. She was an avid Twins and Vikings fan. Some of her hobbies included reading, collecting antiques and crossword puzzles. She learned to use her computer to stay connected with family and friends. Jackie and Ed were married for forty-seven years before his passing in 2001. Jackie and Ed enjoyed traveling, visiting family and playing cards with friends. Jackie truly enjoyed the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She remained in her home up until her death. Jackie was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church for over fifty years. Jackie and Ed were strong supporters of the church. Jackie is survived by four children, Deborah (Donald) Flatau of Springfield, MO; Paula (Vicki) Rishovd of Golden Valley, AZ; Mark (DeVonna) DeShaw of Lake Elmo, MN; Maryan (Maui) Connell of Spring Lake Park, MN; ten grandchildren, Laura (Chris) Petrie, Elizabeth (Tino) Leone, Karl (Emily) Flatau, Jesse and Alex Arrowood, DeLissa DeShaw, Cathryn (fiance, Jeremy Blankenship) DeShaw, Andrew DeShaw, Adam Connell and Anna (Michael) Lorence; six great-grandchildren, Jonas and Kara Petrie, Joel, Jana and Joslyn Leone and Brinley Flatau; two brothers, John Richard Stockstead of Bayport, MN; C. John (Kay) Black of Steamboat Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Kay Stockstead of Minnetonka, MN; numerous nieces and nephews. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Edward (2001), son-in-law, Charles Connell, brother, Robert Stockstead, two sisters, Inez Bonk and Sydney Knight.
