Howard A. Westlie age 83 of Moorhead, Minnesota formerly of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota died Sept. 21, 2012 at his residence. Howard Allan Westlie was born on June 7, 1929 in Tyler, Minnesota to Emil and Ethel Knapp Westlie. He grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1948. He then attended the University of Minnesota. On Sept. 10, 1950 he was united in marriage to Bette Courneya in Detroit Lakes. He served in the United States Army from 1947-1953. He then started a 30 year career with the Unisys Co. They lived in Bloomington, Minnesota and later Jackson, Minnesota before retiring in 1991 and moving to back to Detroit Lakes. Howard has lived in Moorhead for the past two years. Howard enjoyed helping others. He served as a volunteer at St. Marychr(39)s and Emmanuel Nursing Homes in Detroit Lakes for many years. He had many special friends. He is survived by his son Brian Westlie, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Eliza Westlie, of Ogema, Minnesota and Marsell McCullough, of Monticello, Minnesota; one brother, William (Sally) Westlie, of Vergas, Minnesota; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Bette (2002); one daughter, Paula Westlie; one brother Duane "Bud" Westlie; and his parents.
