Gary Allen Schmit

Gary A. Schmit age 56 of Detroit Lakes, MN died March 27, 2013 at Essentia Health - Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN. Gary Allen Schmit was born on November 20, 1956 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Edwin and Betty Murray Schmit. He grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1975. Over the years Gary worked in sales for a number of companies including Bridgeman's Land O Lakes of Moorhead, MN and Dacotah Paper of Fargo, ND, where he has worked the past thirteen years. On September 22, 1984 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Martinson in Vergas, MN. They made their home in Fargo, ND for four years before moving to Detroit Lakes. Gary loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and golf. He also enjoyed taxidermy, owning and operating Mirror Image Taxidermy. He liked conservative talk radio and John Wayne western movies. He was known to be a perfectionist in his yard work as well as in his taxidermy shop. He liked being around people and was a gracious host, always making sure everyone was well fed. He was very active at First Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon and a Trustee. Time spent with his family was very important to him. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou; two sons, Adam Schmit, of Ottertail. MN; and Landon Schmit, of Detroit Lakes, MN; three brothers, Larry Murray, of Lake Park, MN; Kevin (Karen) McDonald, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Keith (Teresa) McDonald, of Mapleton, ND; two sisters, Deborah Schmit, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Diana (William) Sandsmark, of Fargo, ND; Step Father, Ronald McDonald, of Detroit Lakes, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
