Waldo T. Johnson age 88 of Detroit Lakes, MN died April 4, 2013 at the Cottages of Ecumen in Detroit Lakes, MN. Waldo T. Johnson was born on June 14, 1924 in Richwood Township, MN to Charles and Eva Gire Johnson. He grew up, attended country school, and helped on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946 during WWII. On Jan. 12, 1951 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Grossman in Detroit Lakes, MN. They lived in Little Canada, MN and Waldo drove truck for Consolidated Freightways. They later moved to Detroit Lakes, where they purchased the Castaway Motel on Big Detroit Lake. Over the years Waldo owned and operated several businesses, including Lakes Ford, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Lakes Sanitation, and Lakes Excavating. He also at one time leased and operated the Becker County Landfill. Waldo was also involved in many land developing projects in the area. Waldo enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and flying. He owned several planes which he used on many of his adventures, including moose hunting in Ontario, fishing in the Arctic, and his cabin on Lake of the Woods. He is survived by his son, Robb Johnson, of Fargo, ND; three grandchildren, Noah, Logan, and Brooklyn Johnson; one brother, Charles (Margie) Johnson, of Olivia, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Johnson; and one sister Donna Livingood.
