Karen Johnson, 59, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, passed away peacefully Friday, May 24, 2013, in her home surrounded by family and loved ones, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Karen Jean Nephew was born on February 18, 1954 in Crookston, Minnesota to Earl and Lucille Nephew. Karen graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1972 and attended AVTI in Thief River Falls, to become a licensed practical nurse. She married Curtis W Johnson on October 5, 1974. They had three daughters. Karen and Curtis made their home in Detroit Lakes, where Karen worked as a nurse at Dakota Clinic. Through the years, Karen was very involved in women and youth ministries at Faith Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Karen enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and second hand shopping. Karen is survived by her husband Curtis; three daughters, Tiffaney (Don) Holm, Kristi (Michael) Moline, and Karissa (Mike) Fish; ten grandchildren: Isaiah, Simon, Zion, Adah, and Zebadiah Holm, Beckham and Elyn Moline, Lucas, Nathaniel, and Andrew Fish; sister, Leann McGowan; brother, Duane (Gayle) Nephew; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in law Mike McGowan, and numerous aunts and uncles.
