Eugene Edward Fuhs, 81, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota died Friday, October 11, 2013 at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Gene was born on October 26, 1931, the son of Edward and Minnie (Johnson) Fuhs in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1950. As a young man, Gene enlisted in the United States Air Force. While serving in Germany, he met and married the love of his life, Ruth Dehlem on June 5, 1954 in Heidelberg, Germany. They returned to the United States in 1955, making their home in Park Rapids, Minnesota. In 1956, they moved to Detroit Lakes and Gene worked at A & B Supply Company. In the early 60's, Gene started Fuhs & Associates and continue to work until retiring at the age of 75. After his retirement he continued to volunteer as a tax consultant for VITA until the time of his death. Gene was confirmed at First Lutheran Church and was also a lifelong member. He was a member of the Eagles Club, chartered member of the Optimist Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion, where he also served as post commander and also a lifetime member of the VFW. Gene was also a longtime board member of the Oak Grove Cemetery Association. He enjoyed playing golf, softball and was a diehard Minnesota Vikings Fan. Gene is survived by his wife, Ruth Fuhs of Detroit Lakes, MN; his children, Juanita (Keith) Gowder of Summerville, SC; Edward (Kathryn) Fuhs of Duluth, MN; Steven (Kimberly) Fuhs of Detroit Lakes, MN; Sharon (Ruben) Esquivel of West Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren, Tammy (James) Ngeno, Robert (Suzanne) Palmer, Sara Fuhs, Daniel Fuhs, Kellie (Nick) Daley, Taylor (Ashton) Fuhs, Rebeca Esquivel; seven great-grandsons; one sister, Sonia (Wesley) Tessman of Grand Rapids, MN; numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, great-grandson, Elijah, two sisters, Marinette Emerson and Elorius Commers.
