March 10, 1954 — November 2, 2013

Lowell L. Crowell, 59, Of Detroit Lakes, passed away Saturday November 2, 2013 at Essentia Health in Fargo from complications due to cancer. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday November 6 at the West Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with Pastor Fred Crowell officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to Wednesday's services at the funeral home. Lowell Louis Crowell was born to Gordon Walter and Mary Ellen Sargent Crowell on March 10, 1954 in Hibbing, Minnesota. His Grandparents were Frederick and Ella Mills Crowell of Sprucedale, MN and Eli and Ida Sargent of Park Rapids, MN. Lowell lived in the Hibbing, Osage, and Detroit Lakes areas before moving to St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended the Seventh-day Adventist church school during his elementary years and then went on to Johnson High School in St. Paul. Lowell moved back to Detroit Lakes in 1979. He married Ellen Bahlman in 1979 and was later divorced. Lowell had his own cleaning business and then went to work for Service Master. He then worked in building maintenance for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Detroit Lakes for the next 25 years. Lowell also loved auctions and worked for three different auctioneers as a ring-master. Lowell's greatest asset was his caring heart. He was always helping people and doing anything he could to make life easier and more joyful for those around him. Lowell was really great around children. They could sense in him someone they could trust and have fun with. Lowell was like his father Gordon: when he was around the ladies he could be a real charmer with a sense of humor and a gift with words. Lowell enjoyed fishing, gardening and flowers; his yard was always weed free with several beautiful flower beds. He was also a sports enthusiast especially for the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Spending hours reminiscing how maybe next year they would do better and what they needed to do to fix their teams. One of the simple pleasures of life that he enjoyed was getting up early and taking his cup of coffee out on the porch and just watching the sunrise and the beauty of the day as it began to unfold. Like his father Lowell was also a wanderer and loved to travel. One of his favorite trips was going with family down to New Orleans and the deep south. He loved reading westerns and often commented on how he was born in the wrong generation. He said, "He would have loved to live in the days of the Old West." He also listened to Country Music with Willie Nelson being his favorite singer. One of the real pleasures of his life was the family get-togethers at the holiday times, His favorite being Christmas. He loved to watch the faces of the children light up as they opened their Christmas presents. He also formed a real bond with his co-workers as he would hang out with them and quite often go to Central market for lunch where they could just sit and visit and watch the people as they went by. His greatest love was his children Lisa and David with his grandchildren Michael and Jonathan. He would do things with them and help them anyway he could to make their lives easier and more enjoyable. Lowell had a constant companion the last 20 years of his life. Lowell had a cat named Lion that would crawl up on his lap and purr away. They were a comfort and strength to each other. Lowell was never real vocal about his faith and love for God. But, every day he would read his Bible and say his prayers. He had an abiding faith in God and was ready to meet Jesus when he passed away. Survivors include his mother Mary Crowell of Detroit Lakes His daughter Lisa (Sean) Osse of Audubon, MN., His son David Bahlman of Fargo, ND. Two Grandsons, Michael of Detroit Lakes and Jonathan of Audubon. His sisters: Wanda (Gary) Green of Vergas, MN Laura (Don) Fjeld of Faith, MN Cheryle Rude of Detroit Lakes, MN His Brothers: Fred (Roberta) Crowell of Detroit Lakes, MN Walter (Pam) Crowell of Hoyt Lake, MN Thomas (Bertha) Crowell of Detroit lakes, MN And a host of nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
