Doris Millicent Goebel

Doris M. Goebel age 95 of Detroit Lakes, MN died March 4, 2014 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Doris M. Goebel was born on August 1, 1918 in Sheyenne, North Dakota to Anders and Gerda Forsberg Nelson. She and her siblings attended country school until the 6th grade. Doris then moved to New Rockford, North Dakota to live with her sister and continue her schooling. She graduated from high school as the salutatorian of her class. Following high school, Doris continued her education at Dakota Business College in Fargo, North Dakota. After graduation she got a job at an insurance company doing secretarial work for the next two years. During this time Doris was set up on a blind date with a man named Paul Goebel, whom she married on August 31, 1938. They made their home in Moorhead, MN. They later lived in California for a few years before moving to Detroit Lakes in 1958. Over the years Doris worked for NFO, Becker County Human Services, and the Detroit Lakes Library. Doris did volunteer work for St. Mary's Hospital, the Senior Nutrition Center, and Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. She was an active member at First Lutheran Church, St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, and Sons of Norway. She enjoyed square dancing, ceramics, quilting, sewing and knitting. She also enjoyed traveling, which included the countries of Australia, Canada, Holland, France, Germany, and Russia. She is survived by two daughters, Deanne (Marvin) Widmark, of Harris, MN; and Deborah (Daniel) Sprague, of Frazee, MN; four sons, Paul (Dee), of Crestline, CA; Joel (Kathy), of Gainesville, GA; William (Anne), of Springwater, NY; and Jeffrey (Cathy), of W. Fargo, ND; thirteen grandchildren, Greg (Janice) Goebel, Brad (Kristen) Goebel, Sarai (Paul) Johnson, Amy (Rick) Davis, Paul Goebel, Aaron (Rebecca Ann) Goebel, Allison (Chris) Hill, Andrea (Art) Crowell-Widmark, Erik (Becky) Widmark, Derrick (Traci) Sprague, Darren Sprague, David (Kayla) Goebel, and Heather Goebel; twenty six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul (1976); four brothers; six sisters; and her parents.
