Avis M. West passed away March 6, 2014 at Essentia Health - Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN. Avis Marjorie (Lien) West was born October 8, 1925 to Oscar and Mabel (Eilertson) Lien in Audubon, MN. At the age of 2 her family moved to Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1943. She married Thomas West on October 10, 1945 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Avis worked at Englund Furniture Store in Detroit Lakes as a secretary. After her marriage to Tom, she worked at West Furniture Store and West Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. The family moved to San Diego, CA, where Avis worked for the US Postal Service. When they moved back to Detroit Lakes she worked at the Lake Park Post Office, where she later became Postmaster. She retired in 1983. After her retirement she and Tom spent winters in Desert Hot Springs, CA and summers at their lake home in Detroit Lakes. Avis was a member of First Lutheran Church, where she was active in Circle and also sang in the Choir. She was also past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her children; Barbara (Harry) Salminen, Alfred (Joyce) West, Tom (Andrea McGillis) West, Evelyn Grignon, and Jane (Steve) Spaeth; grandchildren; Stephanie West, Al West Jr, Nicole West, Jessica Lage, Jessica Ford, Stephanie Berry, Kate Spaeth, Kristen Okeson, and Alexis West. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, her parents, her sisters Stella and Betty, and two granddaughters, Amy Emerson and Sarah Emerson.
