Vernon L. Hanson age 88 of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away Friday April 4, 2014 at the Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, MN. Vernon Lauris Hanson was born on May 18, 1925 in Emmons, MN, the youngest of ten children born to Andrew and Sarah (Sondrol) Hanson. He graduated with the Emmons High School Class of 1943. During his early years he worked at a commercial vegetable farm, helping with harvesting vegetables for the canning companies. He later worked as a "Fix it all Mechanic" for a company in his home town. He married Rhoda Schultz on June 12, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ogema, MN. They lived in Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes a short time before moving to Moorhead in January of 1950. It was in Moorhead where he started a 35 year career with Consumer's Gas Co. and Northern Propane Gas Co as a propane serviceman, earning many service awards and honors. He retired in 1984. Vernon enjoyed Pheasant hunting in his early years and later fishing and deer hunting. He and Rhoda spent many days fishing in the summer and winter months as well. They also shared the same birthday. He took pride in driving clean cars and wearing leather shoes that were always polished. They had a summer lake home on Detroit Lake for many years, which was a special place for family and friends, providing many happy memories for all. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1995. He is survived by his wife Rhoda, sister in law, Betty Hanson, of Byron, MN, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and three sisters. His wife Rhoda would like to express great gratitude to the staff of Sunnyside Care Center for their unwavering kindness, care, and love for Vernon.
