Howard Dahlen age 75 of Detroit Lakes, MN, died May 31, 2014 of complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Howard was born April 14, 1939 to Hans and Lucile (Danielson) Dahlen in Milnor, ND. When Howard was 10 years old, his mother died. He and his older brother and younger sister and brother were raised by their father. He graduated from Milnor High School in 1957 and from Valley City State College in 1964. He then taught at Lincoln and Washington Elementary Schools in Detroit Lakes until retiring in 1997. Before college he worked as a carpenter, on a railroad section crew, in a lumberyard, and for the U.S. Forestry Service in Idaho. On March 19, 1965, Howard married Gloria Moxness at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in rural Milnor, ND. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Howard was devoted to his family, was a loyal friend, and was quietly comfortable with himself. He also truly wanted all of his students to be successful. He liked hard physical work, especially outdoors, but also knew how to relax and enjoy his many hobbies. He was an unselfish, compassionate caregiver to family and friends, beginning with his mother during her illness. Howard is survived by his wife Gloria; sons, Paul (Jane) of Rochester, MN and David (Carissa) of Eagan, MN; grandsons, Peter, Philip, and Andrew, of Rochester and granddaughters, Brenna and Shayne, of Eagan; brothers, Jadie (Margie) of Fergus Falls, MN; and Orvis (Reta) of Long Prairie, MN; and a sister Helen (Charles) Busche, of Bismarck, ND. Following graveside services at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Milnor, ND, friends and family are invited for time of fellowship in the church.
