Benny R. Carnegie age 87 of Detroit Lakes, MN died June 4, 2014 at his residence. Benny Ray Carnegie was born on April 19, 1927 in Stephen, MN to Raymond and Geraldine Richards Carnegie. He grew up and received his education in Stephen, MN graduating from Stephen High School in 1945. While growing up, Benny worked with his father on various jobs, including hauling freight from railroad cars to area merchants with horses. Benny served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1949. Following his discharge from the Army he entered the U.S. Customs Service in St. Paul, MN. He later moved to Duluth, where he inspected ships in Duluth Harbor. He then moved to Grand Portage, MN, where he worked at the Pigeon River Port of Entry. On July 2, 1955 he was united in marriage to Irene Olson in Richfield, MN. In 1956 they moved to International Falls, MN. In 1957 they moved to Roseau, MN, where he worked at the Pine Creek Port of Entry. He retired from there in 1999 and they moved to Detroit Lakes, MN. Benny loved time spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed people, and would always be there for others who needed help. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, mowing grass, and playing cards. He was a life member of the VFW and the DAV. His pride and joy was his 1950 Mercury pickup truck. He is survived by his wife Irene; one daughter, Randine (Bradley) Endersbe, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sons, Douglas (Linda) Carnegie, of Borup, MN; and Robert (Kathy) Carnegie, of Badger, MN; six grandchildren, Tanya (Robert) Rhodes, Ethan Endersbe, Leslie Hilde, Jessica Carnegie, Rosalie (John) Neset, and Stephan Carnegie; five great grandchildren, Shawnae and Sheyenne Hilde, and Emily, Izabella, and Joshua Neset; three sisters, Carol Curry, of Stephen, MN; Sue Holland, of Blaine, MN; and Geri (Larry) Ortler, of Blaine, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Joyce Weickum and Virginia Moline.
