Duane Grossman

June 29, 1935 — October 10, 2014

Duane W. Grossman age 79 of Audubon, MN died October 10, 2014 at Essentia Health in Fargo, North Dakota. Duane Willard Grossman was born June 29th, 1935 in rural Pelican Rapids to Henry Allen Grossman and Edna Viola Iverson. His family moved to the Detroit lakes area for a time before moving to a farm South of Audubon. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1952 and his first job out of school was picking potatoes. He also worked for the railroad, the post office and was in the National Guard for 17 years before settling in to farming on the same family farm with his father. He met Phyllis Elaine Olson from Vergas, and was united in marriage on November 28, 1959. They took over the family farm and together raised four children while starting out in an 8 x 28 foot trailer. While raising his family and farming he still found time to be involved in many community organizations. He was a long time member of St. Peter's church, serving as church council president for several terms and on many other committees. He helped establish the local Bird's Eye 4-H club, was a member of the Audubon Elevator board, the Becker County Extension Office committee, Associated Milk Producer's (AMPI) board and the Lake Eunice Township board. He was still serving on the Becker County Soil and Water Conversation board and a member of the Audubon American Legion Post #339. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing football, softball, basketball, bowling, snowmobiling, playing cards and woodworking. He had a way of building special relationships by playing games and practical jokes with nearly everyone he met. Above all he valued family and friends. Duane will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife Phyllis; four children: Kristi Anderson of Detroit Lakes, MN; Keith Grossman of Audubon, MN; Kari (Steve) McBride of Oakwood, IL; and Kevin (Martha) Grossman of Brooklyn Park, MN; He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale Grossman; and one sister, Harriet Somdahl.
