Harvey Gordon Handegard, 85, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Essentia Health-Oak Crossing. Harvey was born on December 10, 1929, the son of Gilbert and Hilda (Lien) Handegard in Lake Park, Minnesota. He attended school in Lake Park, graduating in 1947. Harvey was baptized and confirmed at Lake Park Lutheran Church. Harvey was united in marriage to Elyda Omberg on December 31, 1954 at Lake Park Lutheran Church. Four children were born to this union, Harley, Diane, Annette and Janel. Harvey was active in Boy Scouts, he was the past president of the Eagle Aerie and the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge. He was also an active member of First Lutheran Church for 58 years. Harvey served on the grounds and building committee and also did electrical maintenance work at the church. Harvey was employed by Lake Park Hardware, Ratz Electric and Mark's Electric. After his retirement he owned and operated Harvey's Electric for ten years. Harvey was an avid reader, enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and spending time with his children, which was a very important part of his life. Harvey and Elyda also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. Harvey is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elyda Handegard of Detroit Lakes, MN; son, Harley (Karen) Handegard of Eden Prairie, MN; three daughters, Diane (Mike) Kuehne of Detroit Lakes, MN; Annette (Ron) Skarperud of Fargo, ND; Janel (Mark) Christen of Frazee, MN; eight grandchildren, Kate (BJ) Harris, Amy & Kelly Handegard, Kirstin (Tad) Hopkins, Ryan Kuehne, Matthew, Brandon and Cody Christen; two great-grandchildren, Jude Harris and Kinsley Hopkins; brother, Willard (Lorna) Handegard of Woodbury, MN; brother-in-law, Julian (Eloise) Omberg of Detroit Lakes, MN; numerous nieces and nephews. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Vivian Arneson, two brothers, Maurice and Wallace Handegard.
