George L. Jernberg age 77 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Monday August 3, 2015 at Ecumen - Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. George Lawrence Jernberg was born December 12, 1937 in Rockford, IL to George and Evelyn Hauger Jernberg. The family moved to Tenstrike, MN when George was a young boy. He attended school in that area, graduating from Cass Lake High School in 1956. He then attended Bemidji State University where he earned his teaching degree. He taught in the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes Schools for several years and served as Principal at a school on the U.S. Military Base in Verdun, France for a year. On December 28, 1963 he was united in marriage to Marcella Bakke in Bemidji, MN. They made their home and he continued teaching at Aurora-Hoyt Lakes. In 1967 they moved to Detroit Lakes where he taught and served as the Assistant Director at the Detroit Lakes Vocational and Technical College. Over the years he also worked and served as Vice President at MSI, and First National Bank, both in Detroit Lakes. He also worked in Real Estate and Insurance sales. George was very involved in the Detroit Lakes community. He was involved in the Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis, school board, Ducks Unlimited and Detroit Lakes Laker Football. He also served on the State Board of Education. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and time spent at his hunting cabin with friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Marcy; one daughter, Terri Jernberg, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sons, Greg (Danielle) Jernberg, of St. Bonifacius, MN; and Brad (Annette) Jernberg, of Detroit Lakes, MN; four grandchildren, Cody and Emma Jernberg and Johanna and Peyton Jernberg; one brother, Bob (Marilyn) Jernberg, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sisters, Charlene Jernberg, of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Judy (Jim) Gorman, of Blackduck, MN; several nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Audrey Stroman and Cecil Makulec.
