Phyllis Marie Hamre, 94, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away Monday, August 31st, 2015 with family and friends present. Phyllis, the daughter of Robert and Marie Hinkle, was born August 4th, 1921 in Crosby, Minnesota. She graduated from high school in Fargo in 1939, and in 1946 received her teaching degree from Moorhead State Teacher's College. In 1949 she married S. C. (Steve) Hamre, and they lived in Appleton, Minnesota until the time of his death in 1953. She then moved to Detroit Lakes, where she resided the rest of her life. Phyllis's teaching career started in a one room schoolhouse in Hope, North Dakota. The last 26 years she taught middle school social studies and geography in Detroit Lakes. Phyllis was devoted to her family and her close friends. She had a special bond with her mother Marie. She also liked reading, gardening, taking drives in the country, and the Minnesota Twins. Some of the best times were family trips to Grand Marais or Itasca Park. Phyllis is survived by son, Drew (Joan Thompson) of Golden Valley, Minnesota and their children Paul and Claire, and by son, Todd (Pam Kruger) of Detroit Lakes and their children Shea, Tyler and Tess. There are also great-grandchildren Ian and Owen. Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents, husband, and brother, Robert.
