Coleman August Nordhausen of Detroit Lakes, MN died February 2nd, 2019 with his family and friends by his side at Oak Crossing Assisted Living under the care of Hospice of Red River Valley and the Veteran’s Administration. Coleman was born to August and Freda (Riegel) Nordhausen in Martin County, MN on his family farm. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then worked on his family farm. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from February 13, 1951 to January 28, 1953. Coleman married Judy Johnson on September 16, 1956. Upon his return from the War, he worked as a mechanic in Jackson and Rochester, MN. He then worked for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources starting in Waverly, then transferred to Windom, Waterville, Glenwood and Detroit Lakes where he completed 30 years with the Department. Coleman was an avid outdoorsman and was involved with teaching school age children Hunter Education and Orienteering. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family and tapped maple trees for years, producing many gallons of pure maple syrup. During his retirement, Coleman enjoyed babysitting his grandson in the summer for 14 years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy; one daughter, Michelle (Scott) Piepkorn, of Park Rapids, MN; one grandson, Kyle; one sister, Lorraine Carlson of Trimont , Minnesota; one brother, Freddy of Butterfield, MN; one brother in law, Phil Johnson of Milford, IA; two sisters in law, Margaret Nordhausen and Wanda Nordhausen and several cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother in law, Don and Vi Johnson; one sister, Shirley Mekosh; three brothers, Keith, Gordy and Roger and beloved sisters and brothers in law.
