Gladys Wellman

Gladys Wellman age 92 of Detroit Lakes, MN died June 23, 2023 at Essentia Health – Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

Gladys Wellman was born April 13, 1931 in Eureka, SD to Andrew and Pauline Rieger Delzer. She grew up and attended country school near the family farm in Artas, SD. Following her schooling she helped on the family farm and also worked at a café in Ipswich, SD. She later moved to Aberdeen, SD with her sister and two girlfriends, where she worked at the Red Owl Grocery Store. It was there that she met Robert Wellman. On July 19, 1953 they were united in marriage in Aberdeen. They made their home in Mankato, MN and later St. Peter, MN, where Robert worked for Red Owl. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1982, where they owned and operated The Village Resort on Lake Melissa. They retired from the resort in 1996 and moved into Detroit Lakes.

Gladys loved to bake and always had her freezers full of baked goods. She was also known as a very meticulous cleaner. Immanuel Lutheran Church was a big part of her life and time spent with her grandchildren was very special to her.

She is survived by one son, Perry (Danielle) Wellman, of Detroit Lakes, MN; two daughters, Susan (Ben) McVenes, of Mankato, MN; and Robin (Tony) Huseby, of Detroit Lakes, MN; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Holm, of Rapid City, SD; Emma (Mike) Capra, of Hudson, WI; and Martha Heier, of St. Peter, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert (2011); one daughter, June Wellman; and her parents.

Funeral Services will be on Wednesday June 28, 2023; 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Audubon, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Audubon, MN. Arrangements have been entrusted to the West-Kjos Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes.
