Jean Marie Brevik, 79, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on the morning of September 25, 2022.
Jean was born in Moorhead, Minnesota on October 12, 1942 to Frank and Florence Haley. She was the second child of six. She attended St. Francis deSales school in Moorhead for her early education. She went to Mt. St. Benedict in Crookston Minnesota. Jean entered the community in fall of 1960, became a novice in July of 1961 then left in January of 1962.
Jean met the love of her life, Allan Brevik on December 31, 1962 in Thompson, ND. They were married on April 4, 1964 at St. Judes Catholic Church in Thompson. In 1965 they moved to Detroit Lakes, MN where they have lived since and raised four children.
Jean was a woman of many talents and abilities. She worked as a nurse’s aide after moving to Detroit Lakes. Once her children were all in school, she had a successful painting and wallpaper business with a family friend, worked at a hardware store, and provided guest services at Best Western. But the job she enjoyed the most was as a jailer (1983-1998) at the Becker County Jail. She was the first woman hired as a jailer. All other females were matrons. As a jailer, she served as program coordinator and work release coordinator. With all these jobs and responsibilities, she still made time to teach CCD at Holy Rosary, be a cub scout den mother and was an advocate for her children in drama, sports, and scouting.
Jean relished her children and family and her homemaking skills were amazing. She was a gardener, loved to bake (bread, rolls, cookies, bars and fudge) and was a fantastic cook. She was known for her beautiful, creative cakes, at school and church cake walks. She kept a pristine, organized home, with nothing out of place. An excellent seamstress and crafter, Jean sewed clothes, costumes, blankets and more for her family and friends. She made dolls, doll furniture, macramé, and anything else she set her mind to! Jean enjoyed doing challenging puzzles and word games. Because of her, birthdays and holidays were a cherished and special time at the Brevik household.
Jean will be profoundly missed by her husband, Al, her children Teresa Dulko, Plymouth, Christopher (Anastasia), Hanover, Scott, Detroit Lakes and Richard (Lori), Prior Lake and her eight grandchildren, Abigail and Zachary Dulko, Tristen and Kiers Brevik, Tucker and Morgan Brevik, Luke and Ashley Brevik.
Preceding Jean in death were her parents, Frank and Florence Haley; parents in law, Emil and Mary Brevik; brother, Thomas Haley; and grandson, Tristen Brevik.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated.
