Jill Marie Nyhus

December 21, 1965 — November 5, 2024

Detroit Lakes

Jill Marie Nyhus, 58, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, under the compassionate care of Hospice.

Born on December 21, 1965, in Fergus Falls, MN, Jill was the cherished daughter of Donald and Exilona (Anderson) Hendrickson. Growing up in a lively household with four brothers and one sister, she developed a strong sense of family and community. After graduating from Fergus Falls High School in 1984, Jill began her career at the Red Owl Store while also pursuing classes at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes. She dedicated many years to her role at Essentia Health – St. Mary’s Hospital, where she worked at the registration desk for the Emergency Room.

On September 10, 1988, Jill married Mark Nyhus at the Federated Church in Fergus Falls. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Jill had a deep passion for crafts and found joy in creating beautiful holiday ornaments. Yet, nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with her family around a crackling campfire—roasting marshmallows and sharing stories under the stars were among her most treasured moments.

Jill also enjoyed riding her four-wheeler and relaxing on the pontoon to soak in nature's beauty. Fishing was another favorite pastime, along with couponing and hunting for treasures at rummage sales and flea markets—she was known for never buying anything without a coupon.

Jill was a devoted animal lover who shared her life with three beloved black Labrador retrievers—Black Jack, Gunner, and Deuce. To her, they were not just pets but cherished members of her family. Jill found joy in walking them, spending quality time together, and vacationing in Arizona during the winter months. Her kindness and generosity touched everyone she met, and she was known for her selfless dedication to her work and community. With an enormous heart, Jill volunteered her time to various causes, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many.

Jill is survived by her husband Mark; mother-in-law Charlene Nyhus; three brothers: Gary (June) Hendrickson, Steve (Deb Bontjes) Hendrickson, and Keith (Diane) Hendrickson; sister Judy (Les) Meis; brother-in-law Kent (Sena) Nyhus; and ten nieces and nephews: Matt, Lindsey, Maggie, Lauren, Tara, Niki, Ashley, Darrick, Kara, and Carley.

Jill is preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law Douglas Nyhus; brother Mike Hendrickson; sister-in-law Lorna Hendrickson.
