Lucy K. Randgaard

Lucy K. Randgaard age 84 of Detroit Lakes, MN died February 10, 2020 at Essentia Health – Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Lucy Kaye Randgaard was born on November 22, 1935 in St. Paul, MN and was the third of four children by Paul A. and Pearl Rasmussen. She grew up spending summers at the family cottage on Lake Melissa in Detroit Lakes, and so began her love affair with the lakes that continued for the rest of her life.

She went to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and graduated with a degree in Speech and English in 1957. Lucy worked summers at Fair Hills Resort spending her days off at the family lake cottage. Upon graduation, she began her teaching career in Cambridge and Farmington, MN.

In 1958, she married Richard D. Randgaard and they had four children together. Lucy continued to teach in Grand Island, NE. While raising her children, she belonged to bridge club, book club, a singing group, and was active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Summers were spent at “the lake” where a love of the simple pleasures of the lakes became a part of the next generation.

With her children grown, she returned to Detroit Lakes and worked at Norby’s. She volunteered at Emmanuel Nursing Home playing piano and reading to the residents. She also played piano for morning Rotary Club meetings and substitute taught in the Detroit Lakes school system.

She was a loving mother and is survived by her children, Mark and Michelle Randgaard of Oconomowoc, WI; Greg Randgaard of Detroit Lakes, MN; Lucy Ann Randgaard of Detroit Lakes, MN; and Elizabeth Randgaard and Juan Castillo of Chicago, IL. She also has three grandchildren, Nick and Lily Randgaard of Oconomowoc, WI and Anakali Castillo-Randgaard, of Chicago, IL

Lucy loved the lake and she treasured the tranquil mornings on the porch, the change of seasons, and the memories made from visiting family and friends.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday February 22, 2020; 2:00 p.m. at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
