Luella Mae Baumgart

January 26, 1929 — November 12, 2024

Detroit Lakes

Luella Mae Baumgart passed away Tuesday November 12th at Essentia Health-Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. She was 95.

Luella was born January 26, 1929, to Ludvick and Margaret (Reinke) Johnson in Dwight, North Dakota. After her parents divorced, her mother later remarried Peter Jacobs and the family moved to Frazee, MN. On August 12, 1947, she married Raymond Wilbur Baumgart at Sacred Heart Catholic Rectory in Frazee. She was named “Prettiest Bride in August” that year. They lived in Perham, Pelican Rapids, Stewart, and Rochert, MN before settling in Detroit Lakes. Together they raised four children. They were married 70 years when Raymond died on June 22, 2018.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee for many years. She liked to decorate cakes and can vegetables in her younger years and was very detail oriented. She volunteered as a food leader in the Rocky Hillside 4-H club, was active in Homemakers club, played in the neighborhood card club and a member of the VFW Post 7702 Ladies Auxiliary.

Luella’s work experience included Bunnell’s, Erie Jr., the Skylark Chicken Ranch and in housekeeping at the Holiday Inn. She showed love through food and made sure she had treats in the house when company paid a visit. When she wrote letters it was as if she was having a conversation right there with you. Luella loved Jesus, her family, parties and events, playing bingo and a good laugh. She was also an avid Tiger Woods fan. Family meant the world to her, and she loved time spent together.

She is survived by her children: daughter Bonnie (Wayne) Dahring of Detroit Lakes and two sons Ronald (Connie) of Colorado Springs, CO; and Scott (Dena) of Detroit Lakes. Six grandchildren: Angie (Ruben) Rojas, Gus Baumgart, Wendy (Steve) Worden, Lori Dahring, Tyler Dahring and Louie Baumgart; Four great-grandchildren: Sheanna (Julian DeSimone), Raelyn and Ike Kagarise and Benjamin Buchholz. Sisters Kathy (Albert) Svihl, Cannon Falls, MN; Geri Simmons, Gainesville, FL; and half-brother Richard Jacobs, Prescott Valley, AZ; Brother-in-law Leroy (Esther) of Detroit Lakes; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son Daniel Baumgart; sisters Adeline Maley and Beverly Ranuva; brothers Virgil Johnson, Gene Johnson and half-brother Tom Jacobs and her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 19 at 10am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, MN. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
