Mauritius "Maury" Albert Ries

Mauritius "Maury" Ries, age 93, passed away, Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Essentia Health-Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Mauritius Albert Ries was born April 29, 1930, in Chicago, IL to Albert and Elsie (Miller) Ries. Soon after, his family moved to Minnesota. Maury was raised in and a mile north of Klossner, MN.

 He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1948. He served in the US Navy from 1951-1955. On December 16, 1953, he was united in marriage to Clara Pivonka in New Ulm. He worked for the US Postal Service in New Ulm and in Detroit Lakes, MN, retiring in 1988. Maury was also a volunteer fireman in New Ulm. He then worked many of the next 20 summers at the Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Maury enjoyed golfing, tennis, bicycling, fishing and being a fan in the stands of his children’s sporting activities.

Maury is survived by his sons, John (Catherine) Ries of Shoreview and William (Julie) Ries of Detroit Lakes; daughters Susan (Wayne) Ristvedt of Alexandria, Catherine (Russell) Seaberg of Detroit Lakes, and Julie Pearson of Alexandria; 12 grandchildren and 20 (plus 2 arriving soon) great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters; Lavonne Grussendorf and Mardell Stueber of New Ulm and Sharon Johnson of Fairmont.

He is proceeded in death by his wife Clara, daughter Jane Radermacher and son-in-law John Pearson, along with his parents and brothers David and Ronald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 8, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be Thursday, March 7 from 5-7 pm at West-Kjos Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
