Thomas Victor Augustin

Thomas (Tom) Victor Augustin, age 77, of Detroit Lakes, MN died April 4, 2025, at Pelican Landing Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes.

Tom was born on June 6, 1947, in St. James, MN to Urban and Rita (Hauser) Augustin. He grew up on the family farm near Godahl, MN and attended country school. He later graduated from St. James High School, class of 1965. He then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, where he earned a civil engineering degree in 1970. While in college he was a member of ROTC. Following his graduation from college he enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was united in marriage to JoAnne Eigen on September 18, 1971, in Comfrey, MN. They made their first home at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was discharged from the Army in 1976, and they moved to Buffalo, MN, where he began his civil engineering career. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1978 when Tom accepted an offer at the consulting firm Larson-Peterson and Associates. He took great pride in the municipal projects he managed in out-state Minnesota and enjoyed the professional relationships that developed along the way; many of these friendships continued beyond retirement. He retired from the profession in 2006.

Tom was a very loving and supportive husband, dad, grandpa, son, brother and friend to many. He cherished time spent with family. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He was also very passionate about the sport of wrestling. He competed in wrestling in both high school and at the collegiate level. He was a big promoter of Detroit Lakes Laker wrestling and was an enthusiastic fan and supporter of many high school and college wrestling programs, which included attending the NCAA Division I Championships for 44 straight years along with brothers, cousins and good friends of the sport.

He is survived by his wife JoAnne; three daughters, Sarah (Eric) Pegors, of Fargo, ND; Paula Augustin, of Edina, MN; and Pamela (Christopher) Grossinger, of Chanhassen, MN; six grandchildren, Marlee, Taylor, Lauren, Cameron, Aubrae, and Roman; four brothers, Jim Augustin, Randy (Jill) Augustin, Richard (Beth) Augustin, and Marvin (Jill) Augustin; two sisters, Annette (Jerry) Krumrie, and Sue (Curt) Leach; sister in law, Mary Augustin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Augustin; and his parents.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the Detroit Lakes Laker Wrestling Program.
