Val Dean Seaberg

October 19, 1935 — January 26, 2025

Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

Val Seaberg, age 89, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at Essentia Health Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Val Dean Seaberg was born October 19, 1935, to Roy and Luella (Pearson) Seaberg at home. He was the eldest of five children. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1953. Following graduation from high school, Val farmed with his dad.

In 1957, Val met Lorraine Gulseth, and they were united in marriage on March 15, 1958, at Richwood Lutheran Church. They made their home and raised their family in Hamden Township. In the fall of 1963, Val started working for Harold Carlson Texaco as a furnace repairman during the winter. The following spring, he worked at Kath Farm Store, setting up and delivering farm equipment. In the fall of 1964, Val had the opportunity to work full-time for Harold Carlson Texaco, delivering fuel and repairing furnaces. In 1969, Val became a commission agent for Standard Oil. In 1975, he became an independent Amoco Oil distributor and Seaberg Oil Company was officially formed. Val was in the bulk fuel business for over 50 years, during which time, he formed many long-lasting friendships. In 1983, he and his sons started Seaberg Power Sports.

Val and Lorraine always looked forward to attending the WMSTR at Rollag, MN, even more so when their grandchildren (Tom and Nicole) would camp with them. This is an event that Val and Tom still attended on an annual basis. Val was a collector of tractors and attended many tractor events, auction sales, and tractor parades with Tom. He was one of the founding members of the Becker County Fair tractor drive. Val will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Val was known for his encyclopedia memory and could recall any form of local history. He loved eating at the 59er Diner and celebrated many birthdays and anniversaries with family there.

Val is survived by his children, Russell (Catherine) Seaberg, of Detroit Lakes, Lowell (Mary) Seaberg of Detroit Lakes, and Nancy (Don) Edwards of Detroit Lakes; two grandchildren, Tom Seaberg and Nicole (Josh) Abrahamson; seven step-grandchildren, Tarisa Bloom, Nick Bloom, Ashley Edwards, Danielle Dickey, D.J. Edwards, Danielle Lundberg, and Logan Kranstover; one great-granddaughter, Allie Abrahamson; twelve step-great-grandchildren; one brother Dave (Vonnie) Seaberg of Detroit Lakes; two sisters, Sonia Anderson of Detroit Lakes, and Kathy Dennert of Aberdeen, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Val was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lorraine; one son Kent Seaberg; one brother, Lee “Bud” Seaberg; and his parents.

Val’s family would like to thank the staff at Oak Crossing and Hospice of the Red River Valley for the care they provided to Val.
